SimCity™ 4 Deluxe Edition App Reviews

Crash

Have not even got to see the opening credits. The application quits unexpectedly which is absurd. I loved this game when I played it on my PC. Hope I get a resolution quickly, I need to do something new with my free time.

Great sim game; some tuning would be helpful

I have been a prlayer of “Sim” games for many years, going back to the first (pre PPC) Macs. SimCity 4 continues to be a wonderful app of that type and works without problem on my MacBook Pro. The improvements over previous versions are significant. There is one area that could use attention, that of the conflict between Types of industries (clean and dirty). I have found that, as suggested by other comments, setting taxes at 20% to one type or other forces a uniform and non-conflicting population for that city’s industry. I would prefer that Industry ZONING allow for the segregation of types in the same way the building rules perform; they want to segregate. With that a player could control and locate clean and dirty building specifically, avoiding the probable mix and then abandoned or undesirable neighbors (cells). I’d like to see the ability to bring sub-way traffic to surface but I realize that has conflicts with surface freight. They would have to be separate network types. The interface is a bit awkward but you get used to it, and considering the sofistication of the game it is reasonable.

:) SOOOOO GOOOD

PLAESE BUY NOWWWWWW!!!!!! so great

Worked for a year until today.

It was working fine up until today. I was playing it, closed it and decided to change my resolution, opened the game back up and now I can’t even click it closed or go into the options. Clicking will work for one option, but not for another. I’ve switched the resolution back to the old one, even restarted the computer, nothing. Played fine when it did work though.

Good game! I don’t know if it’s worth $20...

I just bought this game today. Played it for like 4 hours so far! Definitly fun and entertaining but for me it just lacks something. Maybe it’s because I’m used to Sims 3/4 where you create a sim and acutally get more personal. You can build a single home and single family. Maybe for me that is just better. However, if you enjoy building an empire or being in charge (there is even a game mode where you are playing as “god”) of a whole city this is probably the game for you. This game is actually very fun once you get used to the controls. At first I was overwhelmed with options but the tutorial will definitly help. Overall if you are debating between sims 2 or simscity it’s really by preference. If you want to build an empire/city then this is the game for you, if you want to get more personal and creative then sims 1,2,3 or even 4 is probably a better route. If you are deciding whether or not to spend the $20 on this game or another game then it really depends on the other game. If money isn’t an issue, I would definitly grab this game anyways! It’s always worth a shot!

Great Game

Works great, no crashes or glitches. I would recommend for any Sim City lover

Great, But it can be hard to learn!

I Bought this game and I’m trying to learn and it’s a little hard. Is there any tips to make a successful city?

Same old Sim city , works better than PC

I’ve played on both and this version works so much smoother, looks better, and performs perfectly , If your looking at this review your thinking about is it worth it to get this version or try the new sim city. Alot may depend on how good your comptuer is, but alot of it is , is the game worth 21.94 i tunes dollars? My awnser is yes, unless money is at a premium other wise I advise you to purchase and see for your self how the worlds best city building simulator works and performs Worth the 20$ I mean cmon

Awesome

its fun and awesome for people who dont have anything to do all day

Non-Retina resolution, disappointing controls

Game was very disappointing. The controls were terrible (maybe that’s why they don’t appear in the game’s screenshots?) Low resolution (looks terrible on a MacBook with Retina display). Game controls are nothing like any standard Mac ones (very 90s feel). Great game, but I wish it was really updated for the Mac.

deletes progress

If your into game that turns of and deletes half or all of your progess this is the game for you. I have gotten far in this game just to see it dissappear twice. dont waste your time or money on this app

great for what it is!

This game is as great as expected.

Please change App Icon

I thinkt his application icon is too busy. Can there be a flat design that looks more Yosemite. I remember the PC Version of Simcity 4 having a pretty flat design; also—if i try to play the game w/ no internet all of my settings are reset and sometimes the game doesn’t even boot correctly.

Great game; but update nukes plugins

If you’re running any plugins, make sure you back them up before you update to this version, because the update will remove them. Completely. It would have been nice for Aspyr to warn in advance about this, because this is going to come as a really unpleasant suprise for a lot of people.

A Mixed Bag

This release, while greatly improved with the latest version allowing for the greater use of custom content, is still a bit of a riddle. The Cons: - Night lighting on custom content (created with the official Building Architect Tool, aka BAT) still does not work. The SimCity 4 Deluxe available for Windows comes fully updated with all official EA/Maxis patches and does not have this issue. - Custom content (aka “plugins”) folders (there are two of them) are located one inside the app (IMHO a bad idea) and the other buried deep in ~/Library/Containers. Perhaps for most users this is not a problem, but I consider myself to be fairly advanced with the management of this game and I like to have more control over my file system. It wouldn’t be so bad if the game recognized symlinked folders, but it does not seem to do so. (It will recognize symlinked files, however, so the amount of tedium you choose to embark upon to correct this limitation is up to you. In fairness, the Windows version exhibits this issue as well.) - There is no way to set launch options; just “full screen” or “window”. I like to play in a window that occupies about 90% of my available display - not possible without finer control. - Windows version users familiar with some mods, such as “extracheats.dll” (which isn’t so much cheats but rather a suite of debugging tools) and “DAMN” don’t work. The Pros: - Runs smoothly and quickly, even with a load of custom content. Granted, I didn’t test it on a huge city, so your mileage may vary. - It won’t crash to desktop (CTD) regularly because you have multiple processor cores (which the Windows game can’t handle out-of-the-box). - Fonts and interface appear slightly cleaner than the Windows version. - Energy use is a bit better than running the Windows version in a Virtual Machine. I actually purchased this game on the app store shortly after it came out and was grossly disappointed by the limitations of it vs. the Windows version. After I read that the custom content file count limitation was lifted I decided to give it another whirl, but I’m still not convinced. It’s definitely a viable alternative (for one reason being that I don’t typically use the night mode) but the loss of some flexibility and the above-mentioned content might be a deal breaker. Currently, I have VM and WINE copies of the Windows version which run almost as smoothly and without any real additional investment in time or performance. So in the end, I suppose it boils down to how much you’re trying to invest into the game - if you’re a “power user”, so to speak, I might suggest you stick with the Windows version, which can be had for a very reasonable price from several retailers and which your Mac will run just as well if not better than a comparable Windows PC. If you don’t mind the cons I listed, then by all means purchase - it’s still a solid version of the pinnacle iteration of one of the most popular PC gaming franchises of all time. Absolutely Ridiculous

“Simply download the mod again” are you joking? It would have been nice to have had a little warning that everything would be deleted. I didn’t even tell the app to update, it just decided to update itself. It’s not as easy as simply redownloading everything. I had so many custom buildings, that I will never be able to redownload it all. I can’t even type I am so angry. This is absolutely ridiculous, and I would expect more from Aspyr. If I could give a rating lower than one star, I would.

Just Bad

Not the 2015 version I was expecting. Oh well.

Disappointed

Ever since the update (which it did on its own; was never asked/prompted to update) the game doesn’t play like it used to. Now when I go to start a new city demand for anything (residential/commercial/industrial) immediately goes into the negative. There’s no way to even get a city off the ground when there’s no demand for anything. It happens with every single city the moment I begin gameplay. I don’t know what else I can do to try and fix it. Any cities I had before the update seem to be fine, but I can’t create new ones. Kind of bummed.

Still a great game to play

Through its many revisions and despite not always treated as paying customers by Aspyr and EA the game still deserves respect. It functional, performs well not as speedy as it should considering it is over 10 years old.

Game won’t open, Feb. 2016

The game hasn’t been able to open up at all these past few weeks. It just bobbles up and down and then stops and doesn’t open. This has happened before but I can’t remember how I got it to work again :(
